Driver's License in Ontario - A Comprehensive Guide
In Ontario, obtaining a driver’s license is an important milestone that grants you the privilege of operating a motor vehicle on the province’s roads. The licensing process in Ontario is governed by a graduated system, designed to ensure that new drivers gain the necessary skills and experience gradually. Here is an overview of the driver’s license journey in Ontario, with Barrie Driving School as your trusted guide.

Stage 1: G1 License
To embark on your journey towards a full driver’s license in Ontario, you must be at least 16 years old. The first step is to obtain a Driver’s Handbook, readily available at various locations, including bookstores, convenience stores, MTO offices, and Canadian Tire. After studying the handbook, you can visit the nearest DriveTest center on or after your 16th birthday to take the theoretical G1 exam. Be sure to bring $160.00 and two pieces of identification. A vision test is also part of the process.
Upon successful completion of the knowledge and vision examinations, you will be issued a G1 license, which essentially serves as your learner’s permit. Under the G1 class license, several conditions apply to ensure you gain valuable experience before progressing to the next stages.
These restrictions include:
- Always accompanied by a driver with at least 4 years of full G class driving experience.
- Prohibition from driving between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM.
- Avoidance of highways with posted speed limits of 80 km/h or higher, including the 400 series highways, unless accompanied by a licensed driving instructor.
- Strict adherence to a blood alcohol level of 0.00%.
- Carrying no more passengers than there are working seat belts.
- Barrie Driving School is here to support your journey from G1 to G2.
- After obtaining your G1 license, you can reduce the one-year waiting period for your first road test (G1 exit test) by enrolling in our approved driving school.
Upon completing the Ministry Approved Beginner Driver Education Course requirements, you can book your road test as early as 8 months after obtaining your G1, rather than waiting a full year.
Stage 2: G2 License
Upon successfully passing the first road test at the end of either 8 or 12 months, you will be
granted a G2 license. While there are still some restrictions with a G2 class license, they are
significantly fewer compared to G1 conditions. These include:
- Maintaining a blood alcohol level of 0.00%.
- Carrying no more passengers than there are working seat belts.
- If you are 19 or under, you can carry only one passenger of 19 or below between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM. If you are 20 and above or have held your license for more than six months, you can carry up to three passengers of 19 or below during the same hours.
Stage 3: G Class License
The final phase of Ontario’s graduated licensing system is obtaining a full G class license. G2 class license holders become eligible for the freeway driving examination (G2 exit test) one year after the issuance of their G2 license. This waiting period cannot be reduced.
It is important to note that the freeway examination must be completed within 5 years from the issue date of your G1 license; otherwise, the license will expire.
